We Need Your Help!
PANGEA needs your help in its work to ensure sustainability and equitability in African bioenergy production, investment, and policies. Over the last four years, we have worked tirelessly to protect a uniquely valuable industry from being tarnished by a host of broader and more fundamental problems. Those that scapegoat the biofuels industry as responsible for food crises and land grabs only distract from the real, structural issues that encourage their occurrence. Our work focuses on the root causes of such problems – insufficient land rights or rampant unregulated speculation – and looks to bring real and lasting change to international investments into Africa. With only a small donation, you can provide a massive amount of support to this cause.
We also promote bioenergy’s potential to increase energy access in African countries. In 2012 – officially the UN’s year of sustainable energy for all – energy poverty in rural areas is at the forefront of the international agenda, and bioenergy is a great fuel with which to electrify those communities isolated from the national grid. Micro- and off-grid generation facilities allow towns and villages to use their own resources – such as animal dung and dead plant waste – to power themselves. This will only be possible with outside resources, and PANGEA is undertaking multiple projects to involve the African Diaspora and international investors in the electrification process. Your money will help to ensure that these ideas become a reality, and rural communities across African can benefit from energy access.
If you need any more proof of bioenergy’s importance to Africa, look no further than its use as fuel for modern clean cooking stoves, which provide a healthy and sustainable alternative to rural Africa’s reliance on traditional biomass. As well as being a champion for the Global Alliance of Clean Cookstoves, we are in the process of creating a comprehensive catalogue of these bioenergy technologies with which the African diaspora can improve the lives of their families and friends back home. Your assistance will ensure that we are able to share this project with as many Africans as possible, and will pave the way for equally important initiatives in the future.

Africa’s bioenergy industry should be enabled rather than condemned, providing a unique opportunity for African communities to increase domestic energy security at the same time as their international competitiveness. The self-sustainable production of renewable fuels allows African countries to decrease their dependence on expensive imported fossil fuels; thereby raising overall well-being. Its development does not have to be driven by large and impersonal land acquisitions from ill-equipped foreign companies. Plenty of examples – including from all our member organisations – exist of ventures that have been undertaken with comprehensive provisions for social and environmental sustainability; and we work to ensure that such socially-inclusive investment models become a regulatory requirement.
